Louie’s Backyard, Key West, Florida

On Friday night, we went to Louie’s Backyard with Cindy, who is a local friend.  The restaurant was a complete surprise. It is a sophisticated, lovely restaurant. I guess we expected a bar-b-que joint.  It was very nice inside but even nicer was the outside seating. We enjoyed the whole experience. It is a romantic restaurant and just hearing the water lapping around us just sets the mood.

I couldn’t get any pictures because it was too dark but everything looked as good as it was to eat.

We started out with the ahi appetizer which was a stack of fried wontons with fresh ahi tuna and avocado separating the layers. Cindy and I had the grouper special for the evening and it was incredible. It may have been the best grouper I have had since we moved to Florida.

Among other things, they have one of the better wine lists around as well. We shared a bottle of Mer Soleil chardonnay because we used to drink it with Cindy.

It is a very big, chewy chardonnay. We know the trend is for chards to go leaner but this was just delicious and it can stand up to anything.

The service was excellent. The wait staff was always there to fill water glasses or keep the service going. It is an expensive restaurant but the food, wine, and the atmosphere was worth it.

  1. Try their Key Lime Pie; it is fabulous!! Made with Oreo cracker pie crust instead of the usual graham cracker crust. They ‘spice’ it up with a couple of fruits on top covered with a drizzle of fruit syrup and fresh whipped cream. Try it with their coffee! Oh Yeah! You have to leave some time after eating as they don’t have sleep off the calories couches–:-(.
