Author’s Guest House was recommended to us by a close friend who lives in Key West. Her daughter worked there. We were told it is nice and very clean. The description was apt. It was very nice, clean, and best of all, they had a place we could keep the trikes that was off the street and under an awning.
We would never have found it if it we didn’t have a recommendation for it. It is a hidden gem of a place located in the historic section of town. It is a little less than a mile to walk to Duval Street. I cannot walk that far so we took a taxi or rode our trikes.
All of the rooms are named for authors that lived in Key West at some time in their lives such as Ernest Hemingway, Harry Truman, Margaret Truman, Tennessee Williams, Thornton Wilder, and James Audubon, to name a couple.
We stayed in two rooms, having to move after the first night. Both of them were comfortable and were basically the same with a little different colors in the rooms. They do have cats walking around the patio area but they were fine. Just as an aside, I am very allergic to cats and didn’t have a problem with them because they were outside.
They locked up after 6 each day but the people staying there had a key to get in. The neighborhood had some beautiful, older homes. It was worth just riding around there to see the homes, most of which were decorated for the Christmas holiday.
They had a lovely pool on the property.
The garden is very nice and it is a great place to sit and read or have breakfast they provided each morning.
I have to say that was the weakest part of our stay. The breakfast wasn’t very good even for a continental breakfast mainly because everything (even the bagels) were in plastic bags from the store.
We chose to go out to some of the wonderful breakfast places in Key West such as Blue Heaven or LaTeDa (you can read more about both of these restaurants on our blog under restaurant reviews. The room rate was very fair. It is located in a quiet part of town but taxis are always available and are there within 5 minutes of a call. The staff is lovely and very helpful. We would recommend Author’s Guest House because it is a lovely moderately priced place to stay. We enjoyed time there.
