What can anyone say about Barnacle Bill’s Bed and Breakfast. It is definitely an “off kilter” wonderful place on Big Pine Key. They usually require a two-night stay but we were able to stay for one night. It was very special, very eclectic, quirky, or any other odd name we could call it.
We were so glad we stopped there because we had the pleasure of seeing the key deer upfront and personal. They walked by the B&B and came right up to us looking for a handout.
We saw signs everywhere that we shouldn’t feed the deer but no one told them about it.
They are the smallest deer we ever saw; basically, they are the size of a medium sized dog. They have the skinniest little legs and are just so darn cute.
Back to the B&B, the architecture was definitely unique. It is brown and white and curly all over. There was almost no cell service except right outside the front door. They said they have Wi-Fi but we couldn’t seem to get on. We wondered how the rooms evolved because ours was under one of the curls in the side of the building.
You had to shrink down not to hit your head on the door. The bathroom was also a bit different. The sink seemed to drop down from the wall and the handle for the water was on the wall next to the sink.
We had a patio outside of our room but really needed mosquito spray because they were out in force when we walked out of the room. It was right on the water and there were an amazing number of water birds (sometimes, it looked like hundreds of them looking for food especially during low tide.
There is a pool and Jacuzzi area as well as a grill that could be used. Mike especially liked the hammock on the property.
There are also kayaks that can be used. Since we rode our bikes there, we couldn’t go out for dinner so we ordered it in and the Chinese restaurant delivered. We ate upstairs in the breakfast area with a wonderful view of the water.
The room was pretty big although it was lengthwise long. The bed was in a cubby area. We slept well. The room had air-conditioning.
The breakfast was very good. There was plenty of good coffee and a delicious full breakfast. Again, it was so nice to sit outside and enjoy it. We had a great time. The highlight was seeing the key deer.
Would love to go back again.
