A Training Summary

Saturday March 24, 2012

I recently ran a report to see how much riding I have done. Wow! Over 1800 miles this year so far.  I knew I had ridden a lot – but that is as much as I usually do in 8-10 months!  Here is a summary by week of my rides training for this tour.   I’ll continue to update this table until I leave. I will begin to taper down the training a bit in week before the start of the tour, but will still be riding some.

Note: The Average Speed column in the table includes all non-moving time.   It includes all the time spent sitting at stop lights, yakking on the phone, taking pictures, stopping to use the restroom, or eating lunch in this calculation. The Garmin Connect website, which is where this data comes from, has recently eliminated the “Moving Average” speed field from its calculations. Moving Average is a much more useful number that excludes all the time spent standing still.

Users of the site have raised such a fuss about this data being removed, that the fine folks at Garmin have agreed to put it back in the next update. Once they do, I will include it in the data I share with you.

Then you will be able to see that my pace is not actually the snail-like numbers shown above, but actually a more turtle-like 10-11 MPH.

Update 04-06-2012. Well, Garmin made an update to their site, and they did indeed put Moving Average Speed back. However, they only put it back for the display of each ride, not of ride summaries reports (such as the table above). That means there is no way to give you the Moving Average Speeds for my training rides. You’ll just have to take my word for it – it’s a bit faster – I tend to average someplace between 10 and 12 MPH depending on the extent of the climbing.
