A Trip Down Memory lane: Charity bike rides in california

When we lived in California, we were so fortunate to ride in a number of charity rides. Most of the time, it was just Mike and I but on a couple of trips, Mac (our Lakeland Terrier) came along in his special trailer. We rode every weekend on regular rides but we also went on some special charity rides. This blog will take you on a tour by tee shirt.

The charity ride we consistently found a way to attend was the Tour de Palm Springs. It is held every second Saturday in February. It supports all of the charities in the Coachella Valley. More than 10,000 riders participate and it is quite an event! It was the first charity ride for me and became a favorite. Typically, we would make a weekend of it and stay in some wonderfully funky hotel and eat in their wonderful restaurants. Palm Springs is a wonderful place to visit for the weekend.

As it was the first time I participated in a charity ride, it became my favorite. The first time we went, it was thrilling and terrifying all at one time. I was riding a regular 2 wheel bike at the time. When we stopped at a couple of the lights with hundreds of riders, I fell because I couldn’t stop fast enough due to foot surgery. After that, Mike bought me my ICE Recumbent Trike and it and I have been partners ever since. The trike freed me to ride as much as I wanted and to go on these wonderful charity rides.

Anyway, here are are few of the tee shirts we received for participating.

My first Tour de Palm Springs. It wa so thrilling to be in a ride with 10,000 other people.
This was the last time we were in California for the ride. We left the following week for our new home near Sarasota, Florida. Oh well, it is still the west coast.
Here is a map of the Tour de Palm Springs. They had 3 rest stations available. Some with music.

We went on other charity rides, all of them were favorites. We wanted to be a part of a ride that took us over the Coronado Bridge in San Diego. The bridge only closes one time a year for bikes so we made sure we participated at least once. All ages participate at different levels but the thrill is going across the bridge. It is a beautiful sight.

Mike is in the foreground as we are just getting ready to go over the Coronado Bridge.

The Cool Breeze Ride was another of our favorites and I am sure I have at least 2 or more tee shirts from that ride but I could only find one. It was always fun to go to Ventura. The beaches are beautiful and up the hill is one of our favorite places in California (among many) Ojai. The ride is beautiful except for the part where you have to ride on the 101 towards Santa Barbara. It is pretty creepy to have trucks and buses going by you at 70mph. We always stayed at the Ventura Marriott. It was close to the bike route and right at the beach. The views of the Channel Islands is spectacular and it is just fun. We don’t ride the century for numbers of reasons but also there is significant climbing on this ride.

Here is a map of the Cool Breeze Century. For us, we went as far as Carpinteria.

We finally drove to Paso Robles for the Great Western Bike Rally that is held there each year. We visited Paso many times and it is another favorite place for us. So much wine, so little time. We went at least once or twice a year when we lived in California. The routes took us all over the area. We found wineries in a different part of the area that we didn’t know about.

Yup, that is Mac with a bad haircut! We had to stop at a winery along the ride.

Hope you enjoy this blog about our charity rides. They were always fun. The weather was always beautiful. It was always a treat to see how many people came out to support the various charities and enjoy the amazing rides. Now, what do I do with all of those tee shirts???

9 Great Ways to Beat the Heat.

First Long(ish) Ride in Quite a While

Sorry it’s been such a long time since my last post.   I’ve just been busy with non-cycling related stuff,  and have not had much to write about.  I have ridden regularly, but have not had time for any extended rides.  I’ve averaged 20-25 miles 3-5 time per week for the last 2 months or so.

I tell you this not to make excuses for not writing, but to lay the groundwork for a recent event.  About a week ago I did a slightly longer ride than I’ve done in a while – about 33 miles.  Toward the end of the ride I started to feel pretty darn slow.  Granted, I’m not much of speed demon even at the best of times, but for the last few miles of this ride I felt like I just couldn’t get the pedals going. Hellooo Withlachoochee!

If you are a cyclist, the Withlachoochee Trail State Park is a place you really want to check out.  But if you are a recumbent cyclist, the Withlachoochee is a trail you cannot afford to miss.    Riding this trail on a recumbent is like spending a day in ‘opposite land’, for you will typically spot more recumbent bikes and trikes during a day on the Withlachoochee than you will spot upright bikes.

The River Mountains Loop Trail and Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail in Henderson, Nevada

The city of Henderson is just 16 miles from downtown Las Vegas.  It not a place you naturally associate with cycling,  but in fact, Henderson is home for two outstanding bike trails – The River Mountains Loop Trail and the associated Historic  Railroad Tunnel Trail.

When living in southern California,  we occasionally would to head to Vegas for a weekend.   Often we would pack our trikes along with us, and then head over to these trails during the day.  Mac even came with us once.  We always had an amazing time and totally enjoyed the rides.

A New Route North From Lakewood Ranch

I spend a lot of time cycling the roads and trails nearest my home here in Lakewood Ranch.  So it is always exciting when a new route opens up that provides a different route from home.  Recently, a new way out of Lakewood Ranch, into the areas north of SR64 has become available.  This may be old news to the folks that are more plugged into the cycling community here in the Ranch, but for me this new route is kind of a big deal.

Emerson Point Revisited

When I arrived in Florida, the first long ride I  tried was from my home in Lakewood Ranch out to The Emerson Point Preserve in Palmetto.  I reported that ride here on The Recumbent Gourmet.

At the time (May), the weather was really hot, and I didn’t have enough time at The Preserve before I had to turn back for home.  So yesterday, I decided to repeat that ride, and explore the place in more detail.  Boy, am I glad I went back!  The place is much larger, and much prettier, then I thought after my first visit.

Sarasota Legacy & Venice Waterway Trails

Today was a day just begging for a bike ride.  I woke early to find temperatures in the middle 50’s, with forecast highs in the middle 70’s.  The sun is shining, the humidity is low, and a gentle breeze is blowing. Wow!  That’s the coolest, nicest weather I can remember since moving to Florida last spring.    Time to ride!

These Rides Have Gone To The Dogs!

It’s been so darn hot and humid here in Florida that I have not wanted to take Mac out in the trailer since we moved.   But finally the weather is starting to get cool and dry enough to let him come along, so there have been a couple of chances lately to get him out on the trail with us.   What a happy dog!   His first rides since arriving here in Sarasota.

PEDAL PUSHING IN PDX

Words and images by Kate Weiner

A friend of mine from Portland, OR told me that her home city is for “biking and eating and not much else.” That works for me! During the summertime, I often took a bike route bracketed by fig and plum trees just the right height for plucking from as I pedaled past. Perfection.

Herewith, a short and sweet recipe for taking a day tour of Portland’s cheap eats and charming destinations.
