The Sandhill Crane is a common site around Lakewood Ranch. Riding our bikes through the parks and neighborhoods near our home nearly always results in more than a few sightings of the big, gangling birds with their bright red heads and grey feathers.

Emerson Point Revisited
When I arrived in Florida, the first long ride I tried was from my home in Lakewood Ranch out to The Emerson Point Preserve in Palmetto. I reported that ride here on The Recumbent Gourmet.
At the time (May), the weather was really hot, and I didn’t have enough time at The Preserve before I had to turn back for home. So yesterday, I decided to repeat that ride, and explore the place in more detail. Boy, am I glad I went back! The place is much larger, and much prettier, then I thought after my first visit.

Sarasota Legacy & Venice Waterway Trails
Today was a day just begging for a bike ride. I woke early to find temperatures in the middle 50’s, with forecast highs in the middle 70’s. The sun is shining, the humidity is low, and a gentle breeze is blowing. Wow! That’s the coolest, nicest weather I can remember since moving to Florida last spring. Time to ride!
These Rides Have Gone To The Dogs!
It’s been so darn hot and humid here in Florida that I have not wanted to take Mac out in the trailer since we moved. But finally the weather is starting to get cool and dry enough to let him come along, so there have been a couple of chances lately to get him out on the trail with us. What a happy dog! His first rides since arriving here in Sarasota.

I’ve ridden for several years in board shorts, and I’ve come to believe they are the best shorts for recumbent cycling in warm weather. I’ll try to tell you what the alternatives are, and why I’ve ultimately decided the board short is the perfect recumbent cycling short.

PEDAL PUSHING IN PDX
Words and images by Kate Weiner
A friend of mine from Portland, OR told me that her home city is for “biking and eating and not much else.” That works for me! During the summertime, I often took a bike route bracketed by fig and plum trees just the right height for plucking from as I pedaled past. Perfection.
Herewith, a short and sweet recipe for taking a day tour of Portland’s cheap eats and charming destinations.
Reflections On The Tour
I’ve been home for a couple of weeks now, so I’ve had time to reflect on the trip to St. Augustine and compile some last thoughts. I’ll try to make a record of what went well and what did not, which equipment was great and which I won’t take again, and anything else that I’d like to remember for the next tour.
